Hi all,

We are moving home in a few weeks time and I have a question regarding suppliers and meter changes in the new house.

Current House (British Gas) = Standard Meters for Gas & Elec paid by direct debit each month after we submit meter readings.

New House (E-on) = Pre Payment Card Meters (Gas and Elec)

What would be the quickest and best option to get off the pre payment meters and back onto standard meters ASAP.

E-on said I would need to apply for a new Key and Card from them ready for when we move in and then put a request in to British Gas to take over the supply from E-on once we have moved in which would take upto 6 weeks. British Gas would then need to supply us a new key and card and then we would need to request to have our meters changed which would take even longer

Just looking for the best option and advice on this as with winter coming I don't want to be spending loads on pre payment meters.

  • I had a similar situation about 12 months ago.
Unless you want to pay for the meter exchanges (about 56 pounds per meter) then find a supplier who will do this for nothing.
    I used EDF.
First make sure you get keys and cards for your supplier at the new address.
On first accessing property register the key/card to the meters and then make sure you know where you can locally top up the cards
You can then supply all the meter numbers to your chosen supplier for a transfer if you want.
About six weeks for the new supplier to be confirmed. EDF then require 28 days notice to change the meters back to credit meters. The gas one could take some time (ABOUT 10 WEEKS IN OUR CASE) because of their workload.

    Good luck

    Morning Chris

Once you take over responsibility for the new property, you can ask for the meters to be changed.

Subject to an external credit check, we'll change the meters without charge.

As one of our advisors has said, let us know when you move in and we'll set up an account. We'll send you the necessary payment devices so you can top up the meters whilst you wait for the meters to be changed.

Hope this helps Chris and best wishes for the move.

That link is fine. You can use that or call our Prepayment Team.

Whilst it's always good to have meter readings, don't worry if you're unable to let us have them before you move in. Still tell us about the move a few days before, either online or by phone, and we'll send out the necessary payment devices.

Also, if there is a delay, you can continue to use the old occupiers key/card until ours arrive.

Good luck for the move Chris.

  • Hi

Not very money saving friendly telling to use the other owners key and card as if they are paying any outstanding bills via the prepayment meter it means I would be paying for them if I was to use them.

  • Hi Chris

This is a last resort only. It's just to make sure you have gas/electricity when you move in.

Adjustments will be made once our card/key is being used. This will make sure you're not out of pocket.

As I said, if you tell us a few days before, we'll make sure you have the card/key so you won't need to use anyone else's device.

As long as you contact the supplier with readings when you move in any overpayments will be refunded.
