cost of decorator?

we normally do all our own decorating so never had to pay anyone before, but just moved house, got a baby on the way and hubby got too many more necessary jobs to do on the house to have the time to decorate our room - i'm getting severe nesting urges and NEED our room decorated before baby comes lol
So, have done most of the prepping but considering a decorator to line the walls with lining paper (as plaster work not brilliant) and prep the woodwork for us so I can just go in and paint.
He has been recommended by a couple of friends, and he charges £155 a day plus materials.
This seemed a little steep to me, but I've never had to pay for work to be done before so really have no idea on costs. We live in Birmingham if that makes any different

I have just paid £400 for a large kitchen to be emulsioned from a plastered state incuding ceiling and three doors, the decorator provided all paint and materials in Nottingham,it was three days work if that helps you0

Really ?
Unless your going to pay some jack of all trades master of none £100 , then £155 is the right area for a true P&D ?Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.0 -
thanks for the replies - my gut feeling is I could probably get someone cheaper but this one is so highly recommended and seems like he'd get a lot done for the money
in two days he will fill all holes, prepare all walls, double line all walls, rub down and prep all woodwork, gloss all woodwork and emulsion the ceiling
he could emulsion the walls but said that would go into the third day and as even in my large bumped state I'm more than capable of emulsionning we will stick to the two days
for us to get that amount of work done would take us several evenings and weekends and neither of us are any good at papering, so hoping that it will be worth the money to get a good job done quickly!
It is difficult though paying someone to do work that we would normally do ourselves0 -
You don't want to pick someone on price, you want to pick someonw who will do a good job. Better to pay someone more and them do a good job than get a jobsworth in just because they are cheap.0
