Get another cat?

Crikey I don't know what to do now!!
If a neighbours cat attempts to come into my back yard, Barney will usually chase them away. Last year I took in a stray that had been outside for about a week and the first day, he just glared at it. The following day was a bit better and by day 3 (when the little one was re-homed) they were getting friendly. We took the stray to the vet to check for a microchip and it was a female, approx 6 months old so maybe one of that sort of age would be ok? Not a tiny kitten but not a full adult either.
And I would definitely look to get it from my local Cat Rescue.

Multi-cat households CAN work, but do the research first and make sure you maintain realistic expectations.

That's exactly what we ended up with
Winston was 10 and a bit of a fighter so we felt that a not quite fully grown cat was the way to go. As it was, he didn't see Treacle as a threat and only flattened him when he'd really been asking for it
Of the cats we've had, they got along the best.... now it's just Treacle so we're having a similar type of discussion.0
