Advice about closing joint account!!

I have been separated from my ex partner for 2 years. We have a joint account together with HSBC and I wanted to take my name off of it as I don't want to be connected to him if he ever gets bad credit. HSBC told me that the account would need to be closed and both of us would have to be there which is not possible! They said I could write him a letter for him to sign giving permission for the account to be closed but he has not returned it. I know he received it as I gave it to his mum and she said she passed it on to him. There must be a way of closing the account or taking my name off it. It has had no activity for 2 years and there is no overdraft or any money in the account. Any help on this would be very much appreciated
