Choosing a tablet

My laptop has become very slow (it's old), so I thought I'd treat myself to a tablet instead, something that's at my finger tips and fast to open and use, for emails, internet and games.

But I have no idea which one to get. Budget is £250

So far a lot have said iPad mini, but I've also had Samsung thrown in the picture (as the galaxy 2 and 3 7" are both down to £139 in Argos)

I've also seen the Google nexus or the Acer Iconia A3 which is a 10" screen

But I seriously have no idea which is best, quickest, best value

If you do a search, there are loads of threads on this already.

But for what its worth I've recently had a Nexus 7 and can highly recommend it!

£250 will get you a toshiba encore with windows 8.1

If you like the idea of still being able to use all your windows programs (it comes with MS office too) then its pretty much unbeatable value wise.

Otherwise, go for the new nexus 7, its leagues above the ipad mini.
  • Thanks.

I do like taking photos too. Is the Nexus any good?

Try some tablets if you get the chance. They smaller screen size than your laptop may make it very difficult to get along with. If you don't actually type much, the on-screen keyboard may be adequate. It will probably drive you nuts if you have to type anything serious with it, but you can get keyboards to use with a tablet.

Either way, keep your laptop, do a factory restore once you've got any data you need off it, clean off the inevitable supplier junk and it may well have a good number of years use left in it.

  • You have received some very good advice already. As other have said try a tablet in a shop, will you be happy typing on it? If not get a newer laptop (or factory restore your existing one). If you are happy typing on it then think about where you will use the tablet? If only at home then 10 inch sounds good, if out and about 7 inch with 3G may be better, I would reccomend the Google Nexus range.

I recently got a Nexus 7 with 3G which is great on my train commute and it fits in my coat pocket.

    Nexus don't has micro SD...

    What size do you after?
Are you use it at home only?

    Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm currently helping my mum set up her own business, and I deal a lot with the emails and Facebook messages at the moment, although my phone is great (I have a Samsung Galaxy S2), I really want a bigger screen and ideally having something that ready to use straight away rather than waiting 10-15minutes for my laptop to boot up and open.
  • Sounds like you would be better off with a fast laptop, what about a chromebook?

Might be worth a look at a Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1.
Gets you the bigger screen, should do everything you require and you'll be familiar with Android from your S2.
Haven't seen the latest, but I was impressed with the camera on an earlier model.
