Does an electric freestanding cooker need a little space each side?

Hi folks,
The family fund have been good enough to offer us a grant up to £560 for a electric freestanding cooker with 5 years guarantee, as old hotpoint one is almost 18 years old and needs replacing.
They have given the order to a supplier but on looking at their website there as only a few on it 50cm wide, a beko one at £220 and some other Indesit.
The space to put it in is about 56cm wide (current cooker is 50cm wide) so just wondering if it possible to get a cooker 55cm wide and would it need much space each side to shield against burning against lower kitchen units?
Thank you for any advice as regards the best electric cooker around 50-55 cm wide.
