Poor quality dog bed from ebay...do we have the right to a refund?

Myself and my boyfriend bought a large dog bed for our puppies from ebay 2 weeks ago. All was well for a couple of days, until the puppies easily tore through the material on the underside of the bed.
I know we should have checked it first, but are we entitled to a refund based on the fact the item is not fit for purpose? We contacted the seller asking for a refund, and got this response...
'Thank you for your email. We are sorry to learn you are not happy with the item. We do recommend inspection of products prior to use. As this item has been used, unfortunately, we cannot accept return on used items. We can only accept returns when an item is in as new condition. We are sorry for inconvenience caused.'
Any help is much appreciated.

What can the seller of the bed do, it was brand new, was it quilted style made of soft material? And when it was received , you inspected it for faults and found none?
You refer to it being the "bed" for more than one pup, it was damaged because pups are inquisitive and chew, dependent on their breed and size, the seller is acting lawfully cos the bed was probably designed for an adult solo dog to sleep upon not for the wanton chewing phase of more than one pup . It hasn't stood up to being scratched, dug, bitten, played with and used as a teething ring for more than one young pup.
Move on. Throw it away if it is damaged and buy some vet bedding instead which is far better for pups, line a crate or pad out the base of a plastic dog bed with it , job done.NB...People online who are here asking advice for "my friend" they really mean "myself" :eek:0 -
Puppies chew stuff! My sprocker puppy has chewed through a good quality expensive bed!
Only buy very tough small beds for puppies and make sure they have other stuff to chew! Apparently antlers are good!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Unless it was sold as being super resilient and dog proof then there isn't much you can do..0

dogs will scratch at things to get comfortable. Mine have gone through dogs beds, sofas, my mattress
and even a 6ft bean bag - that was fun to clean up!!! just to get comfy.
they scratch away at them as though they're trying to bury a bone in it, and cotton doesn't last long against pup claws.0 -
Unless is was sold as chew/scratch proof like say, a tuffie dog bed then I don't see how you can ask for a refund.
I bought a bed a while back, two hours later it was a heap of innards on the floor. Not the sellers fault.
Dogs, especially puppies, chew anything and everything.Sigless0 -
We're shortly to get a puppy from the Guide Dogs (we've become puppy walkers for them), and have been specifically told not to buy a bed straight away, as they will just chew it up. Instead, we've been told a cardboard box and old blanket will do until such time as they've lost their baby teeth.
I'm sorry, but I really don't think you can complain when you've clearly not done any research before going out and buying the bed.0 -

thanks to everyone for the responses.
i don't see how you can say we've clearly not done any research? We actually looked at a lot of dog beds, and this one was advertised as being resilient and 'scratch resistant'. this is clearly not the case.0 -
I would interpret scratch resistant as meaning your average sensible dog can ruck it up while bedding down without causing too much damage. If the pups have torn through the material on the underside, they've probably been quite rough with it, as otherwise it would be the top that was damaged. Even do, 2 days is a bit rubbish, unless they've had their teeth in it. How strong did the material seem on inspection when it first arrived? And does the material look ripped, chewed, or what? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
And don't even think about leaving the seller bad feedback - this isn't their fault. It isn't your fault either, but it also isn't theirs. It would be unfair to leave bad feedback for this.0

Exactly. I bought a product from e-bay that I was very disappointed with, but it was as described by the seller.. I gave positive but non-committal feedback along the lines of 'arrived promptly and well packed'.
I agree with the majority, puppies chew and scratch, it's almost certainly not the seller's fault.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0
