SOuthern chic - can you please explain what you mean by buying a half moon and then asking them to slice so you have round?

Surely you would have a lot of wastage?

Southern Chic do you have a photo?
We were going to forego having a wedding cake to be honest BUT we were going to do a massice help yourself cheese board with local Welsh cheese. From this board we then realised we could make it a cheese wheel wedding cake!
We are really excited about it now and have some baskets for the crakers and have picked our flavours :) Yippee!

I'd investigate local award-winning cheesemakers and visit their shop direct, rather than going to M&S. Taste, pick and choose your cheeses individually and buy a whole cheese wheel direct from the maker.

Just as a price marker Snowdonia Cheeses in North Wales do a 2kg wheel for £35, 100g per person is also about about an average portion.

I`m a wedding photographer and covered a wedding with an amazing cake of Northumbrian cheeses. With the grapes / floral decs it was probably the best set of cake shots ever but....I have never heard so much moaning from guests. Some wanted sponge, some wanted fruitcake but most complained about the tremendous smells that took over the room. Inevitable given the numbers / heat generated but it did really become the most talked about issue of the day and there was so much cheese left over. I was happy - I came home with two boxes of my favourite cheeses and great shots.

If you buy a half moon and slice it in two, when you put those slices next to each other you have a circle, not sure why that would produce any waste.

    jinky9 - Your joking?
We have our heart set on a cheese wheel cake! Smell shouldn't be an issue as our reception is in cool barns outside but it nevercrossed my mind that people would not actually want cheese!

We are cheese and crackers mad in our house and ourimmediate family love it as well, I have no idea about the rest of the familywho are coming though!

Our reception is in an old Victorian farm and gardens withbarns, campfires, games etc so I suppose the family won’t be expecting a ‘proper’wedding anyway with the traditions of sponge cake and fruit cake.

We are having ‘afternoon tea’ after the ceremony so thereare cakes before the main meal… then Welsh short bread followed by the cheese cakecutting and crackers…

Don't panic SCMP! The moaners will moan no matter what. Sounds like you have plenty of other food options too!

However, my venue did try to put me off a cheese wedding cake by saying that not all guests tend to like them. Although to be honest not all guests like fruit cake, or sponge cake, or cake full stop! I'm not actually a huge fan of unmelted cheese myself apart from very mild cheese but theres also crackers, chutney etc to munch on!

    *deep breath* lol

I've looked back at our plans and decided that some people will moan no matter what:)
I had to show my mum photos of cheese wheel cakes because she was NOT impressed with the idea. When she saw them she now thinks it is quite a quirky and pretty idea.
There is plenty of food as it is basically a big BBQ picnic so people should be able to find something they like!
Afternoon tea and cakes - hog roast, salads and quiche - cheese wheel and local chutneys - short bread - welsh crisps - campfire stew at night.

It took me ages to work out that you meant slice it horizontally! I even cut a bit of paper out trying to work out how cutting a semi-circle in half then putting the two slices together made a circle :rotfl:

scmp, glad your mum has come round to the idea. You're right, people will moan about SOMETHING, no matter what, and you will never please everyone, so just please yourselves :D The BBQ picnic sounds lovely :)
