Supermarket cheese wedding cake

We're considering killing two birds with one stone and making a cheese wedding cake using supermarket cheeses stacked together and serving it as an evening buffet. Mainly to save money, and I think its quite a cool idea. M&S sell one ready put together but I think it would be cheaper to DIY it from Tesco.
Do you think Tesco would be happy to sell me whole cheese wheels?
How much cheese would we need for 70 people and which cheeses would you choose?
What would you serve it with? And what quantities?!
Sorry for all the questions! Just quite excited to think that we might be able to actually do an evening buffet and also have a cake to cut and stay in budget!:o

Are there any farmers markets near you? have a look online at the supermarkets and see what price the sort of cheese you want is per kilo and you will then have some prices to work with. You could dress it with grapes and other fruits, it could look really great.0

Serve with a few types of different crackers, chutneys, grapes.0

Make sure that the venue you have will allow a cheese wedding cake, ours wouldn't.!0

Take a look at this site - they look really good and it will give you an idea how many they serve.

Really great idea.0 -
You could always try your local market too a lot have a cheese deli in them now. Your still supporting local trade then instead of giving it the big giants like Tesco.

Thankyou for the helpful responses, I have messaged a few local places to see what they suggest re pricing and quantities, its looking that 75-100g of cheese per person is about right. We do have a farmers market where we live but its a very upmarket one for the tourists = everything more expensive on it.
Fingers crossed our venue will allow it, they know we are on a small budget so maybe if we pay them for the extras and to serve the cheese cake it would still work out cheaper than the standard evening buffet!
I saw an idea on a forum that suggested putting little mice bride & groom on top - love it!GC2012: Nov £130.52/£125

We looked into it but our venue wouldn't allow us to source our own. They were going to buy all the cheese wheels and then probably charge us a bit extra on it. The ones that don't allow it is probably because it takes money away from them due to no evening buffet.Married 30/08/14 :heartpuls0 -
We had one at our wedding a few weeks ago. We got our cheese from sainsburys. Amazing service.
Best thing to do is buy half moon and ask them to slice so you have a round. We brought 5 varieties in total for 150 people and it cost £80. We also got crackers and chutneys from there too. Went down really well with our guests and defo cheaper than getting a caterer to supply it.0
