Where on the chimney breast is it, and what sort of shape is the damp patch?0

Its on the left side of the chimney breast and goes around the side. It is a thin patch which goes up the side. It is patchy not a continuous shape more blothy and is yellow colour. The one downstairs is like a wave and close to the floor0

I wonder whether it's rain coming down the chimney? I have two blotches on the front of my chimney breast, which when you look closely have brick shapes in them.0

Go and look outside and examine the chimney : top and exterior sides.
Chances are
* water is either getting in from the top (is the chimney used? If not, consider a chimney cowl)
* penetrating the side - is the pointing damaged (the cement between the bricks)?
or
* poor ventilation - has the chimney been capped off completely?0 -
I will certainly go and have a look outside. The blotches dont look brick shape. Thanks for your responses.0
