It is 99 to 1 that the pump is not working.

Thermo gravity will allow hot water to rise.

Fire back boilers used to warm water in a cylinder without a pump as long as the cylinder was higher than the fire.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • you shouldn't have needed to touch the rads if the heating has been previously working, you have now un-balanced your system & now you can't alter it because you have snapped the valves, it sounds to me like either you don't have enough water in the system or most likely the pump isn't working, from your knowledge of your system i would leave well alone before you cause even more problems, so now you need replacement valves as well as poss a new pump meaning the cost has gone up,

martin in this this case you have given really bad advice & now cost the OP more money

I've just tapped the pump a few times with a screwdriver and it's now working!! :T

The only radiator not working is the one in the living room.. but I've snapped the spindles off both ends.. and I wasn't heavy handed at all.

I'm hoping it's just that the valve is turned off :o Can I get a new one and are they expensive?

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice.. I really do appreciate it... time to get ready for my nighshift at work now.. at least I can go, knowing I don't have to fork out for a new pump!
  • well done, yes i should have suggested that, although it has stopped for a reason so be prepared to have to have it replaced & or your system cleaned as black water will indicate a dirty system, yes the valves can be changed & there are serveral ways to do it, although if you are thinking of doing it yourself the system will need to be drained
