Weird Cat behaviour

Our cat who we have had for a few months has started to behave oddly with her food. When I put down her wet food she has taken to 'burying' the food with her paw, the same way as she buries her toilet with the cat litter. And she is only eating a little of it. Has she decided she doesn't like the smell or taste? She has done it with different flavoured cans.any advice?

Thanks for that link, very interesting. I give her tescos meat cuts in jelly morning and evening and dry food at other times in the day when she is hungry.0 -
is she tucking into the dry food ok? If she is, then perhaps just give her that for a while?0

How much wet food are you actually offering her each meal? Perhaps it's too much. Try just giving her a 1/4 of a pouch (25g) morning and evening, leaving a small bowl of dry food down for her to nibble at throughout the day.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

There is another theory about this. This is the idea that a cat tries to bury the food because they think it’s poo, or at least no better.
:rotfl: it sure smells like the same thing to me!
Have you changed anything recently? Gotten a new cat? Moved the food bowl or gotten new ones? Has anyone new recently moved in close, or is there a new cat on the block? If none of that or anything else new has happened, have you considered getting her teeth checked out? It might be good to rule out any physical eating problems, but it'd be cheaper to rule out the other stuff first, of course.
Is it a new food? You could try getting a different texture of food - perhaps a pât! or flakes in jelly. Let us know how it goes!0 -
She doesn't like it! You can persevere just giving her a little at a time so she's hungry, or try a different type of food. Some cats get bored with the same food after a bit, or sometimes the manufacturer changes the recipe.
I would try to ring the changes a bit, but don't make the mistake of buying ever more expensive food - that's the way to a very fussy cat.0 -
Yes try a totally different type of wet food.0

it might be a little bit more expensive but go for a wet food with a high percentage meat content, 60% or above, like feline fayre or the purely range from pets at home, it is worth it though to ensure your cat is getting the right and complete nutrition she needs
always make sure it is a complete food, it says on the packaging, see how she goes with one pouch, my beebs used to have half a pouch at a time, he wasnt very big and the rest of the time i would leave him a little amount of purina one biscuits to graze on during the day0 -
Thanks all, nothing has changed that I know of, she is an ex domestic ferral cat so she is still catching mice.she is eating the dry food so I will give her that for a couple of days and buy some different wet food. I have found it hard finding out the protein contents of food, will have another look.0

Did you get her from a multi cat household or cat home etc?
My cat did this for months when I got her, apparently the other cats in her previous home used to steal her food. So she was trying to bury it to hide it. She once even got a t-shirt from the washing pile and covered up her food with it. Stopped it now though.0
