Is there a cheapish way to cover a ceiling that doesn't look cheap.
Any ideas??
We have awful artex, but I can't afford to have it plastered at the moment.

How much have you been quoted to have it plastered? You may be pleasently surprised.
I did this recently for the inlaws. I don't like doing ceilings but was prepared to make an exception. I scraped off the high points then I used Artex Stabilising Solution then applied more Artex over the original with a trowel to do achieve a smooth finish. The result looked OK.
The room was app 11x12 and, I charged them £120 plus materials.
TBH I don't know of many cheaper options that they could have tried.
Alterntively, have you considered trying to steam the Artex off and then use lining paper?Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
An 11x12 room as long as the ceiling was not falling down and the artex 3ft thick it would not cost you much more to plaster skim, we have done mates rates jobs for around £140 - scrape - pva - skim.

By the time you've put the skim on there isn't much headroom left !!!0 -

That seems very reasonable price.
We had a quote of £240 for a room about that size, but that was about 5 years ago and I assumed it would be much dearer now.
I will have to get a new quote.0 -
Was the £240 for the whole room? Or did the plasterer think he was quoting for a whole room?Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0

The price you were quoted sounds about right but get 3 quotes and recommendations if you can there are loads of DIY trained guys out there, about 20% of our work is making good errors made by others. If you have more work in the pipline this may stimulate a lower quote and it does depend on where you live of course.
