Speed limits M6 - M54

What a total mess...

Journey up the M6 and M54 today.

50mph in the roadworks on the M6 fine. Then around J9 they end. National speed limit signs. OK all good.

Then a few hundred yards the overhead gantry is showing 60mph. But only the one gantry (all lanes). So is the limit now 60 or 70?

Then onto the M54 as i joined it has 2 big round 50mph signs. Then literally less than 100 yards after there were 2 large round national speed limit signs.
BUT... 50mph repeater signs between the barriers. The overhead sign had a warning about night works.

So I have had my moan and think temporary signs are UTTERLY STUPID.

But which sign is the legal one and which limit applies?

  • M6 around Birmingham/wednesbury and m5 junctions have been havin roadworks ever since I can remember. The overhead electronic signs are a traffic calming measure. Depends what time you travel in there. Peak time the speed limit changes rapidly to improve the flow of traffic. Basically they don't want everyone bombing it down at 70mph then creating a traffic jam of cars due to the volume. So they rather people slow down to 50-60mph to keep the traffic moving. There are cameras on the back of the overhead signs so very easy to get caught out.

As for the m54 I can't say I've travelled on it.
An opinion is just that..... An opinion
  • The temporary 50mph restriction on the M54 is for building a junction to the new Jaguar engine factory. A lot of people are being caught by the average speed cameras.

I would assume the speed limit is 50 until the road work ends or find another route.
  • Don't know the answer to your question, but surely the safest option would be, if in doubt keep to the lower limit.

Norman Castle: Yes the Speed was in the red circle so the legal speed limit. But one gantry only and no following gantry saying the same speed or national speed applies.

So the query there is how far does the speed apply from that one Gantry?

RichardD1970. Yes the safest option would be stick to the lower limit. But the speed limit should not be in question surely.

Because a worker left one 50mph sign up after roadworks finish is the speed limit still 50mph?

When the speed limit lowers they are supposed to have 2 large signs either side of the road.
There were 2 50mph signs BUT then soon after there were 2 national limit signs.

So which speed is the legal one? Then the overhead signs on the M54 also said night works. But this was before 5pm..

Just looked like en easy money making scheme to me.
