Bin Liners

B and M sell good one for 69p for 6, usually £1 anywhere else.
mine usually tear because I put hedge clippings and branches and thron bushes in them. I never use them to line a wheelie bin.
As regards paying a company to clean your bin, well good for you, you must have the money to spend that way.
Nothing that a hose out back can't clean I find in about 10 mins every couple of months or so. I always fill it with ordinary black bags that I have in my kitchen bin.
Another strange little tip, As a lot of councils now won't allow you to overfill your wheelie its necessary to push the stuff down to compact it so as to get more in. I had one of those bullworkers keep fit devices (those of a certain age will know what I am on about) I was going to dump it but its brilliant for compacting the waste. Gives you a mini workout in the process as well
I saw specially made device for this purpose on late late show a few years ago, cant find the website though.

Do you not have a brown wheelie bin for garden waste? Our local council provides one and have a special collection day for it.
I don't find there's any problem with keeping the brown wheelie bin clean, just hose it out as you say. The same goes for the green wheelie bin we are provided for recycling paper, plastic and aluminium.
The main issue is with the blue (in our case) bin. Colours vary from council to council but ours is blue and is used for disposal of general waste. I find, as others appear to, that an unpleasant smell develops in the bin over time which can't be eradicated by hosing, pressure washing or the application of disinfectants or bleach.
All of our rubbish goes in packed into white bin liners from our kitchen/household bins.
The only thing we have found which will leave the bin smelling fresh is the service provided by Enviro Bin Cleaning. We have used other companies in the past who only charged £1 or £2 per clean but it was less effective and no better than the methods used by ourselves.
I am genuinely sorry if you think that £6 for that cleaning service is out of your reach. I fully realise that not everyone would have even this small sum at their disposal. The purpose of this site though is to provide moneysaving tips and I feel it is reasonable to suggest that this bin cleaning service I have recommended be included. Detergents and full sized bin liners cost money too. To me it makes economic sense to spend £6 every few months to have the bin cleaned properly rather than wasting time and money doing it ineffectively.
Using a full sized bin liner may do away with the need for any cleaning. I don't know personally as we've never used this method. The OP may be able to provide an opinion on that.0 -
Being of a certain age (well into bus pass happiness) we've come through times when every penny had to squeak before we parted with it. Anything to do with house maintenance had to be done by us, there wasn't money to pay anyone. Even some of our furniture was made by us. So, even though we could now afford to pay to have the bin cleaned, it wouldn't feel right to do so. It's probably a generation thing. The bin stays fresh and clean provided the liner doesn't split or tear - hence my original post!
GlynD, I ordered heavy duty bags from Amazon then got asked for a further £5.99 for carriage so that got cancelled. I've been told there is a company at The Cutts, Dunmurry, who stock heavy black bags so I'll be searching them out.
Many thanks to everyone.

My bin cleaner comes every other week when the bins are emptied, he charges £2 each time. Blasts with red hot water and then disinfects.0

I'm retired too Ticked. In my case it was an enforced medical retirement. I've been through a few tough times in my life financially, including the most recent one whist I waited for my pensions to be resolved. I wouldn't have paid for the bin to be cleaned then as every penny had to count.
Having the bin cleaned and the windows done feels like luxury to us as a result of our recent fiscal difficulties.
I managed to catch my mother out the other week though when we saw a load of grassy turf on the back of a lorry. I told her that was my next plan: to have my lawn sent away to get cut.
Sorry to hear about the excessive delivery charge on Amazon. In many cases I have to decide if it's worth it compared to driving to where I need to pick these things up. There are also quite a few items on Amazon which are delivered free of charge in the UK however so I would respectfully suggest that, next time you look for something, see if you can identify the products offered for free delivery. It will say on the page, quite prominently, when this is the case.0 -
