Help with faulty hard drive

Hi all
I've got a fault with an external hard drive. I've browsed the Internet and found a few sites where I can download software to recover the files off the damaged partition however, all the ones I've found so far are trials and I have to subscribe & pay to save all the recovered data..
Does anyone know any software that I can download that will scan and save the recovered data for free ??
Regards
Matt
