Connecting ipad2 to TV with sound - cable help

Hi, I want to be able to connect my iPad to the tv for using itv player etc.
I bought a connector from apple that plugs into the iPad and has a female VGA port on the other end.
Now, I know I need another cable to attach that to my TV but I am getting a bit stuck (have already bought the wrong thing, twice:o).
I have what looks like another female VGA port on my TV but on looking a cables online I think that would mean there would be no sound. I could watch on the Tv with the sound coming from the iPad but that wouldn't really be ideal.
So, should I get a male VGA to HDMI - would that work with sound?

If the cable coming out of the ipad is VGA, then there is no sound on it. You can put and hdmi adaptor on it, there will still be no sound.
You either need an adaptor on the ipad which will carry the sound too, or you need a cable from the headphone docket of the ipad to an audio in on the TV.1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -
Ah, so what I have is more designed for connecting the iPad to projector screens etc, doh.
So, starting with a blank canvass, what would be the best way to connect it to the TV with sound or am I unable to do that?
(I hate anything to do with cables......)0 -
I bought an Apple AV lead (3 phono plugs into tv)
Not everything works on the tv. (certain games and music videos)0 -
other option phono to scart. (plus composite AV lead)
My tv is like spaghetti junction with connections0 -
I try to keep away from behind the TV at all times lol. I leave all that to my husband who has his 'system'. Sadly he isn't really computer literate so I am left trying to figure this bit out myself!
So, before hitting the buy it button, will this work
Damn, can't get the link to work on iPad, it's this http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/22030675/693345836/-/ListingDetails.html?_$ja=tsid:13315|cat:22030675|prd:22030675&$$ja=cgid:7025485977|tsid:48121|cid:130773417|lid:54129039897|nw:g|crid:22604417697|rnd:2114123795403505682|dvc:t|adp:1o9|mt:0 -

Even if the 3rd party lead works I don't think many apps support tv-out so it may be a disappointment.0 -
I would've thought that there should be a better option than composite - that's for low quality pictures and the iPad has a higher resolution than a TV.
Another option is to get an AppleTV set, which is badly named as it doesn't do TV, but it can display the iPad's screen.0 -
I use this Digital AV Adaptor on my ipad 2. But requires an hdmi input in your tv. Transmits sound and images on apps that are compatible with it. Not all apps are, but most I've found will show a direct sized image on the tv at the very least without expanding it to fit the tv. Works with itv, channel 4, channel 5, bbc apps, as well as likes of tvcatchup app however. ios 6 for sure.
If you do not have a hdmi on the tv, you could use a vga connector, if you have vga on the tv. But you would need to route sound in additional and at the very least this means using a cable from the headphone socket on ipad, to either a home cinema unit (which undoubtedly would have hdmi, thus negates the use of a vga connector) or as a direct input into your tv which you would need to look to see if you do have that.
First off you need to know what inputs you have spare on the tv. Find an hdmi one, and your troubles are solved with the adaptor I posted. Just buy an additional hdmi cable to connect between that adaptor and the tv and that's all you need with the adaptor itself. You can purchase non-apple product that says it will do the same, mileage may vary with them, but having had mine plugged in pretty constantly for last year or so I will stick with the dearer apple one as it's lasted without breaking etc. For some channels you have to remove it to change channels on things like catch up tv on some apps, as you can't do both screens at same time.0
