George...

Not sure if this is the right board for vacuum cleaner chat, but couldn't see where else it might fit?

Anyway, has anybody had the George version of the Henry hoovers? I have a big hairy dog, and the only access to the kitchen and garden is through the front door meaning that everyone has to traipse through the sitting room to go for long muddy walks. Inevitably, my carpet is a mess. It's a rented property with that really cheap carpet that always looks awful, but I'm dying for a decent hoover so it at least 'feels' properly clean.

I've been looking at the Miele Cat and Dog which has great reviews, although I'm tempted by the George as I can also give the carpet a proper wash with it.

Thoughts, anyone?

I would always have said that Dyson is more effective for dog and cat hairs than anything else but then again I've not given this much thought for a while.

I don't know why I don't fancy a Dyson, but I don't. I suppose they never seem as sturdy for some reason? My parents had one for a while and bits were always breaking before they got rid of it.

I need something that can really stand up to a bit of abuse - my OH, with the best intentions in the world, just doesn't think about picking up the various chunks of stuff the dog's chewed to pieces before running the hoover over it.

Dyson's are very sturdy. The best I've seen. What's great with them too is that if a part does break or wear out you can get a replacement very easily and it just slots in like a piece of lego.
  • Sounds as though, you need a dual purpose cleaner with good suction!
There are many good machines on the market but remember when you are looking, look for the more powerful motor. It's down to personal choice.
Bagless machines in theory are good but do not like pet hair as they block easily and have to be cleaned out often. If you don't want to go commercial for cost then the good old Aquavac wet or dry has been a personal choice of mine for years. It does what it says on the tin!
  • Had a Dyson and our Henry(etta) does a better job at half the price. Gets rid of dog hair no problems. No idea on the George though.

I have had a Henry for over 15 years. It gets knocked down stairs, dropped, bumped etched and continues to work without fault. The motor is very robust. It has never broken down. I bought a new brush attachment for it last year and it was less than £5.

    I don't use a bag with it.

I have used Dysons and find them completely over engineered and over complicated. They are also flimsy in comparison to the sturdy Henry.

If the George is like a Henry, it will win hands down.

After some extensive googling, it does seem that a George is as good as a Henry in the 'being thrown down the stairs or attacked by a dog' stakes. It also seems to be able to cope with sucking up anything the OH will think of pointing it at, and I can get an additional brushy bit for the hair.

Now MSEers - where's the best place to buy?

Weve had 2 georges in 25 years - very useful as a wet cleaner but far too heavy for every day use. When the first one broke about 8 years ago we purchased the lite version from attached link as it suits our needs

    http://www.cleanstore.co.uk/products/productslistSub.asp?Main=Carpet-Cleaning-Machines&sub=Carpet-Extractors

Just wet vac'd the carpets in a rental property and it did a fantastic job - not as good as new but a vast improvement.

Dyson for everyday use but not again - they have become very 'cheap' in build terms but not in purchase price.

Oh dear now I'm confused again! I've had a look at the Lite version, but it states that it's just meant to be for wet vacuuming? I'd prefer a lighter version (and cheaper!) but I want it to work as well as the standard version for dry vacuuming. If I want it for both should I go for the heavier one?

I have a George and a henry for work, the George weighs 2 Kg more so not a lot.The henry motor is a bit quitter but suction is the same and they do clean floors carpets well. You get a separate hose for use in wet mode and extra attachments for wet cleaning
