Purchased a bed online - it has dangerously sharp corners, not fit for purpose

Options
Hi guys, this is my first post on here, wasn't really sure who to speak to about this but i really hope somebody on here can advise me on what i should do.

I recently purchased a bed online from a well known bed website and it arrived a few days later.

It is a brand new metal framed bed, it was flat packed so i had to put it together. While putting the bed together, i noticed that quite a few of the parts were very poorly welded, loads of rough patches on the metal frame, etc.

None of these stopped me from putting it together (defects were on under the bed so not visible/due to cause any issues), so i continued putting it together.

When it was all complete and ready to put the mattress down, i noticed 2 very sharp corners on the bed. These are facing outwards and i've since scraped and cut myself on one of these 3 times, it's unavoidable.

Here are a few pictures, the point is fairly sharp and what i would consider dangerous (especially around young children, pets, etc.)

Excuse the sock tied around the corner of the bed, it was for my own safety but the sharp point has now ripped right through it.

It doesn't let me post links yet so please add www. at the front of the links to view the images.

As you can see, the welding on the frame is also a bit of a mess.

I have not yet contacted the place that i have purchased it from because i really don't want to have to take it apart and send it back to them for them to send me another one that i will then have to put together. If they want to come down and do it and bring a replacement and put that replacement together, they can do that, but i think that's quite unlikely.

What should i do?? would i be better off contacting trading standards or someone like that, how many more of there beds are like this??

Thank you.

That does look shoddy - I would be inclined to email the shop and ask for their view and whether they can send you a proper replacement or if they are all like that a refund.

You can get advice from TS/Citizens Advice: http://www.tradingstandardsblog.com/contact-trading-standards/

Trading Standards are also responsible for dealing with unsafe goods being palced on the market so if you report them at the above link they might also look into it - although that wont affect your own situation.

How much did you pay for the bed?

The photos look like every cheap metal framed bed I've ever seen, they all have the obvious welding and the same as anything square/rectangle it will have corners that will hurt if you walk into them. I have my step kids beds that are all metal framed (two single and a set of bunk beds) and they are all exactly like the bed you have.

It's definitely not right, i have had cheaper Argos beds in the past and even they have not been this bad. A bit of dodgy welding i would expect on a cheap bed, but the corners on this one are very sharp, it's like having a nail sticking out.

Only 2 of the corners are like this, the others are fine.

more likely to be a manufacturing defect i would have thought

perhaps they will send you some replacement parts.

Just to save the hassle to taking it apart, waiting for a new bed etc etc could you not put some grey/sliver gaffa tape which would hardly notice over the area? Gaffa tape is very strong but I can imagine it wouldn't take much to find a cheap roll for about a couple of pounds.

    Here's some! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Duct-tape-Gaffa-Black-Silver-Red-Cloth-Tape-10mx50mm-Waterproof-BUY3-GET1-FREE-/221243547923?pt=UK_Crafts_Cardmaking_Scrapbooking_Glue_Tape_EH&var=520151324656&hash=item338324a113

From a practical point of view I'd agree -- if the company won't sort it out without a lot of hassle, find a big metalwork file, or an angle grinder, and take the rough bits off. This may affect your warranty (hah!)

Touch up the paintwork to stop it rusting away :)

Some kind of padded material glued on might help too, like you see wrapped round metal scaffold/support poles to prevent clumsy people walking into them and braining themselves.

And then remember which bed supplier not to shop with in future.
