Purchased a bed online - it has dangerously sharp corners, not fit for purpose/

Hi guys, this is my first post on here, wasn't really sure who to speak to about this but i really hope somebody on here can advise me on what i should do.

I recently purchased a bed online from a well known bed website and it arrived a few days later.

It is a brand new metal framed bed, it was flat packed so i had to put it together. While putting the bed together, i noticed that quite a few of the parts were very poorly welded, loads of rough patches on the metal frame, etc.

None of these stopped me from putting it together (defects were on under the bed so not visible/due to cause any issues), so i continued putting it together.

When it was all complete and ready to put the mattress down, i noticed 2 very sharp corners on the bed. These are facing outwards and i've since scraped and cut myself on one of these 3 times, it's unavoidable.

Here are a few pictures, the point is fairly sharp and what i would consider dangerous (especially around young children, pets, etc.)

Excuse the sock tied around the corner of the bed, it was for my own safety but the sharp point has now ripped right through it.

It doesn't let me post links yet so please add www. at the front of the links to view the images.

As you can see, the welding on the frame is also a bit of a mess.

I have not yet contacted the place that i have purchased it from because i really don't want to have to take it apart and send it back to them for them to send me another one that i will then have to put together. If they want to come down and do it and bring a replacement and put that replacement together, they can do that, but i think that's quite unlikely.

What should i do?? would i be better off contacting trading standards or someone like that, how many more of there beds are like this??

Thank you.

Under the Distance Selling Regs you are entitled to return the goods for a refund, irrespective of fitness for purpose.

If you don't meet the DSR criteria, then you're looking at the trading standards rules i.e. the Sale of Goods Act. I think that's the Consumer Direct website.
  • Surely your first port of call would be to contact the supplier. They might be extremely concerned to learn you've received a product from them in this condition, could just be a one off that has slipped through & they might be more than willing to help out.

If you do wish to reject the goods then I would think having to disassemble it would be inevitable, but speak to them & see what they say!

In all honesty, if I had found what you described whilst assembling I think I would have stopped right there & contacted them regardless of whether it was visible or not. The welding in those photos looks pretty poor to me. I've had a few metal beds over the years & they've never been very sturdy. Having one fail & collapse whilst entertaining one evening was an extremely embarrassing situation!!

Agree with you and the other posters. Welding is poorly finished and sharp edges should have been ground smooth. Also potential problems with exposed bolt and screw heads which could also tear flesh/bedding. Looks like a poorly designed and made product.

I would ask for a full refund. I wouldn't want another one of these.

What was the site you purchased from and the name/size of the bed? Be interesting to see if what they advertise is the same as you received.

I wouldn't give a bed of that design house room. Just asking for trouble in the form of cuts and bruises.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
