Please help Edf sold previous owners debt to a collection agency in my name
Hi,
Hope it's ok to post this here. I moved house in July and even on the day we arrived there were letters from Edf chasing the previous owners for the outstanding gas and electric bill of around £300. The house had been empty for almost a year so we assumed the bill would be settled once the house had sold. Anyway we rang Edf the day we moved in and gave the latest meter readings and informed them we'd moved that day.
Then a few weeks later we had a letter to say our gas and electric was being turned off due to not paying the bill, this letter was addressed to us. I called again and explained the situation and i was assured it was a mistake. Another week or so later we had similar letters this time addressed to the previous owner. I then rang customer services pretty angry by now and gave the estate agents details so they could chase it up and I was assured there would be no more letters and there wasn't.
We received our quarterly bill in September and the amount was calculated correctly and we paid straightaway. However today a letter arrived from a debt company for the £300 debt in my name. Edf have obviously sold the debt to this company in my name. I'm livid as this could affect my credit rating and I'd do everything I should have done since moving here. Has anyone got any experience of this happening and what can I do next?
