L&D interview help

Hey all,

I have managed to get an interview for an L&D job :) It is internal at the same company but wondered if you could provide me with any advice.

In the interview I need to complete a 10 minute learning session on communication skills, has anyone got any thoughts on how I should approach this? There are absolutely no instructions in the interview invite, so I assume it is a complete free for all.

I have been racking my brain for days and keep 2nd guessing myself!!:mad:

Thanks :)

If you are successful in getting the job, will conducting learning sessions be part of the role?

    Hi,

Yeah they will, it will be mainly for engineers and then their managers.

Do you work in L&D already? Or is this completely new?
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Relate your session to a case study

Identify an issue where a lack of communication skills caused a problem in the company - and then demonstrate how you would educate staff to ensure the problem didn't happen again.

Make it positive - don't put blame on anyone - .... use the then/now/future approach e.g.

This is what happened in the past ...
This is what I would do about it now
This is what will be better in the future ..

Hi Kiki, I do in work in L&D at the moment, my secondment ends in 2 weeks i've been here for 9 months. This is the same role but with engineers rather than general administrative employees.

Hi Tony thanks for that, I could do that actually what a very good idea. I've actually created a communications brief and used it within the contact centre - this would be a good starting point.

Do you think it will matter in the interview if I cater it to non-engineers?

Do you think the interviewers will be role playing? As the invite just states to complete a 10 minute learning session and nothing more :)

    Thanks again all :)

If you're communicating something to someone else you need to consider:

    - what do they need to know?
    - at what level do they need to know it (how much detail or technicality)?
    - what is their current level of knowledge?
    - what is the best way of communicating it? Consider: language, pace of delivery, variation in tone of voice.

In a training setting, also consider duration of training activity, breaks, handouts or other resource documents, use of presentation software, formal or informal methods (s a classroom course required to disseminate information / develop skills - or will learning through others or e-Learning be satisfactory?_

People receive information in different ways : audio, visual and kinetic (movement). Different people in an L&D situation will have different preferences; therefore in a training situation it is good practice to try to vary this rather than just using one.
  • Ok. How do you think you are going to do a L&D job full time if you can't even plan and deliver a ten minute session for interview?

Get a grip, I said in my first post I've created multiple scenarios, however I was second guessing myself.

Thanks for your input though, I can't stress how much you've helped. Have a lovely sunday keyboard warrior.
