Christmas - parlour games?

We used to play "The moon is round" too !

    Another good game is "Photographs"

Two people are "in" on the trick. One of the two people leaves the room. The other takes a "photo" of someone else in the room. (pretend photo of course)

The one taking the "photo" then sits or stands in the identical position to the person they have "photographed" and calls the other person back in. When they re-enter the room, they look around (add a bit of drama here :)) and successfully identifies the person who has had their photo taken ! Ta-dah !!

It baffles people for hours, there will be lots of theories about how it's done and when someone guesses the trick, they can join in the secret too. Just tell them not to tell the others !

The 'photo' game reminded me of my dad and 'The Fluence', normally demonstrated in the golden hours after he'd opened his home-brew for the evening.

As kids we were fooled by this for years, but once we knew how it was done we were forever saying 'Show them how you've got The Fluence, dad!' when we had visitors. It simply involved him putting four or five cards face down on the table, then leaving the room while somebody, anybody, touched one of the cards. He'd then come back in and demonstrate how he had The Fluence, hovering his hand above each card in turn. Of course, my mum was in collusion with him and would make a barely perceptible movement or a barely audible sniff when his hand was over the correct card, but this would go unnoticed because we were too busy watching what he was doing and because he would hesitantly move on to other cards and only return to the right one again if my mum was quiet and still, so that there would be no noticeable connection between her and what he was doing.

It's funny to think of all the baffled visitors that we never got round explaining this to (only one person ever rumbled us and that was because we kids could not stop sniggering at the critical moment!), but even funnier to think of all the people that are probably still convinced that my extremely down-to-earth dad had genuine psychic powers :rotfl:

We love love love " Who's in the bag" and "What's in the bag" There are cards of who or what and you describe them, the beauty of this game is a choice of 3 on each card the bottom one being suitable for younger children or those that want an easier option. You have a timer and work through as many as you can in the set time for your team be it Girls v Boys, family against family. We bought different members of both sides of the family the game so we know there will be a game wherever we go!Yeah Holidays are coming.

at school during rare free periods us kids would play a game involving paper and pencils and five categories. There were two versions of this game.
The first was Fruit, Flower, Animal, Vegetable and Name. one person would call out a letter of the alphabet and everyone would then write down as many of the categories beginning with that letter they could think of within a minute. 1 point for each correct answer. The winner was of course the person with most points.

The other was like Chinese Whispers.
Fold a piece of paper vertically five times. then write in these five headings.

    Name Did How Where When

    for Example
Jane Skipped Merrily in church at midnight
what made it interesting is that there is only one piece of paper - each player writes one categorythen folds the paper so the next person cannot see what is written - so you can get some totally bizarre Sentences! its just for fun so nil points!
  • Last year I got a bingo game cheap from argos. The kids were calling out the numbers and it was really nice. We never usually play games as a family.

We play lots of board games at Christmas, and now at my SIL's every 6 weeks or so.

I buy them in Charity shops/ebay/car boot sales throughout the year... we have: articulate, Pictionary, rapidough, scattegories, cranium, TV/Film game, I'm sure there's more but I can't remember them all!

Our top fave's are articulate and rapidough. :)

W H Smiths often have them very reduced just before Christmas.

Drummond Park make fantastic games, so any of there's are worth picking up if you see them for less than a fiver. It can be done!!! :D

I read that as a little tongue in cheek, meri, rather than a serious suggestion ;)
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
  • Has anyone played Qwirkle? I've recently seen it in a catalogue and think my two would like it. What do you reckon for a very clever 6 year old and a nine-year-old?! And where's the best place to buy it?
