The true average fuel consumption of the 1.4 turbo is about 37 mpg so short runs will be less
  • If DPF isn't a concern for you I wouldn't worry about the choice. Pick based on engine size/insurance/tax/mpg but most importantly history and condition.

I'd argue the MPG's given for most of these "eco" petrols aren't achievable by the majority of drivers except in perfect conditions (I.E. on a rolling road).

Of course diesel is on average 7ppl (31.82263ppg) dearer so need to factor that in if running costs are a major concern to you.

Biggest issue with Dpf equipped diesels isn't local running around as such, as they will regen when they need to.

The issue is incomplete regen's causing diesel to end up in the oil and the engine being damaged as a result.

I would definitely be looking at the petrol version, should be slightly cheaper due to the popularity of diesels these days.

My wife's mileage has dropped from 18k with lots of A road and outer London use to purely outer London use as we have moved house and now barely 8k a year.

Her next car will be petrol I suspect.
  • Thank you all for your very helpful advice. All noted and much appreciated......
