Monitor Problem!! HELP!!

Options
Hi Guys,

Switched on my computer this morning and the base unit was running fine. Only problem was the monitor wasn't coming on. It automatically switches itself to standby mode. When trying to switch it on again I just get a blank screen.

I think it may be a RAM problem, can anyone help?

Why do you think it's a RAM problem? My first thought would be a graphics card problem and second to that a problem with the monitor itself. You can eliminate it being a monitor problem by connecting the pc to a different monitor or trying the monitor on a different pc.

We had this problem with my son's computer and it WAS a RAM problem - check it is seated properly in the slots, in my son's we had had the RAM out to check what it was so we could get hold of some more, and it hadn't quite gone all the way back in.

    Thanks superscaper,

A similar problem happened a couple of yrs ago and I was told it was to do with the RAM. I think the monitor is fine, you say its a graphics card problem does this mean I need to buy a new card and install it.

The PC is quite old maybe it would be better to buy a brand new one??

If it is RAM then there would be an indicative beep on boot up and the OP hadn't mentioned it. Every time personally I've seen a monitor power up but not display so far it has been a graphics card problem. In which case the card will need to be replaced.

we had same problem a while back and it was indeed the graphic card.

  • I am having a similar problem with my monitor, when it switches on, it stays on for a second then screen goes blank but power light is still on, and if you look closely at the screen you can make out the words very faintly. if you switch on/off until eventually it comes on. I can't afford a new monitor and don't really know of anyone who won't rip me off by fixing it and charging loads. Someone actually suggested it may be graphics card but I am not very techie, not quite sure what a graphics card is and where it is on pc?

I would tend to think its the monitor or G-card, as suggested try a different monitor if that works then bingo its your monitor.

I am now using a old monitor that has been stored in the attic for years, but it works. The only thing is my monitor that is broke is 19'' and the one I now have to use is 12'' , so it is a big difference and I really miss my monitor :(

Well at least you know it's the monitor that's the problem in your case. How old is the monitor, maybe it is under warranty or could be repaired if it is not a reasonably amount of lifetime.

I bought it august 2005 and it was only under 12 month warranty.
