Hi, I hope one of you talented techie guys can help me. I scan my computer and husbands laptop daily for 'bugs' and this morning avast showed that there was a trojan on both machines, My husband pressed the button/option to remove all. Which appears to have worked on his laptop ( the one im using now) but on the main computer (my one) it has left the computer screen blank. The notification we had on his laptop was VBS:Flufferminer - D [Trj].
it was either flutter or fluffer. The monitor has power as the no signal sign flashes when I turn it off and when I turn the computer on the avg sign flashes then goes. The mouse works and I replaced the batteries. My question is three fold, how can I get a screen up on my computer? How can I fix (with your help) our computers? How can I tell if my husbands laptop is disinfected?
Many thanks
Janey

  • Hi,

Assuming you have Windows on both machines - the Avast forums suggest this is a false positive and the file generating the virus alert is a file downloaded as part of a recent Windows Update:
I can't post a link as a new user, but try searching their forums for topic no 139878.30 if you want to read what they have said.

The forum users have said this has now been resolved with the latest Avast definition updates. For your husbands laptop I would suggest updating Avast to the latest definition updates and then performing another full scan.

The computer monitor problem is little stranger. Few questions:
    1. What version of Windows do you have?
    2. When you turn on the computer, at what point does everything go black? Do you get the windows logo first? Does it go black after showing you logging into Windows?

If you press ctrl+alt+backspace, does task manager come up? If so, go to File -> New Task and type explorer.exe. What happens then?
    Squirrel!

Hi there, thanks for your replies. burtward911, we are running windows 7 on the pc. The screen stays black we dont get any windows logo we get nothing apart from the monitor briefly flashing a AOC (not AVG, as I first said) logo then returning to being blank. Esqui, we have tried control alt delete and control alt backspace and nothing shows on screen. We are wondering if the graphics card has blown, I would be surprised if this is the case as the computer is only 6 months old.

You are saying that the screen is black - is the video signal getting to the screen ?
unplug and re-plug in both ends of the video lead
Does an indicator LED (green ?) show on the monitor when the PC is booted up ?
I would be trying to get the boot screen / BIOS to display - which will mean that you can get into Safe Mode.

I had trouble with my graphics card and was told by my pc repair shop to plug my monitor into the processor instead. That did the trick.
If you think it is your graphics card perhaps you could do the same

There is 'no signal' coming from the computer, also the monitor does not come out of standby which is yellow so does not go green.
My husband set up a home group between his lap top and my pc and when he clicks on home group from his laptop it shows that the other computor is not switched on/part of the home group.

    what does that mean

which operating system, which model of computer, does F8 safe mode work, do lights come on the machine

presumably the video lead is in securely at both ends?

OK, so you are getting what sounds like the AOC monitor logo flash up, but then nothing after that.
If you can post the exact make and model of your computer that might help if someone has the same model.

Can you remember if you would normally get BIOS information flash up? Something after the AOC logo, but before the Windows logo? Either writing, or a computer manufacturer logo?
If you would normally get something like this and don't now, it sounds like something hardware related. This is sort of a hardware check before it loads any Operating System. In that case and if you didn't buy it from an online store it may be worth returning the computer for a check under warranty to make sure all the internal components are secure and working. Opening the case yourself will invalidate any warranty.

If the BIOS information is still shown, or you never had anything like this, you can try powering on the computer and pressing F8 repeatedly quite a few times for about 10 seconds, this will load a Windows 7 boot options screen. If this doesn't show up, again, it suggests it is failing to even get to the beginning of trying to load Windows.

That should give you some options to try and narrow down the problem. It would be bad co-incidence to have a hardware failure at the same time as the virus alert, but not impossible. Hopefully it is just a Windows problem!

Hi everyone, thank you for your replies they have really helped. We bought the computer off the internet, it is still under warranty so I'm going to phone them this morning and see what they say. I thought it was due to this trojan flufferminer but I think as you say it is just coincidence it happened after running a scan to remove the trojan, as my husbands laptop is working fine and as you say this is a false positive. I will let you know how we get on and once again many thanks.
