does anyone have and recommendations for buying artificial grass? Is it worth getting the (more) expensive kind? Can we put it down ourselves?

Most DIY stores will sell it and have samples on display so you can see and feel the different types. We looked at it when a friend was thinking about having her small townhouse garden done - the cheapest stuff was not very nice, but some of the mid-range stuff looked and felt nicer (in my opinion) than the more expensive ones. From the research my friends did it looked possible to lay it yourself - If you're willing and able to do a bit of grafting.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

You can lay it yourself but the finished result will depend on the effort that you put in. Among the things to consider are the drainage, depth and type of sub-base, membrane, perimeter frame, etc.
With regard to the type of artificial turf to use you should avoid the really cheap stuff because it looks poor and will not last. Avoid the stuff with rubber backing and go for latex. Look for a dense pile because it looks better and lasts longer. The best types do not need sand or rubber crumb infill to keep the pile upright and these have added advantages. There is a debate over possible health hazards with rubber crumb. Sand infill gives a place for dog urine or similar to sit and smell. No infill means less maintenance because no danger of infill compaction blocking the drain holes. Some people vacuum clean the artificial lawn but you cannot do this with sand infill.
Any questions just leave me a message or go to Greenstyle Artificial Lawns website and leave a message. Lots of information on laying techniques there.
Edit to add - the website is my own, my business is in installing artificial grass.0 -
I like the idea of getting artificial, very cost effective!0
