And anyway - how did you get Windows XP - 15 years ago - it was only released in 2001 (12 years ago) ...
I was guessing/rounding. I know I had XP about then and assumed I must have had it a couple of years before I personally owned it. First personal PC I owned it on was bought in December 2002.

and then you pop off to Amazon and buy a licence key for Windows 7 Home for £30.

...and at that price it will probably be some already pre-activated OEM licence key from a amazon re-seller - which when used on your machine will declare the installation to be illegal/invalid - as the key is already being used on another machine.

    I agree with you - The 8.1 upgrade is a ridiculous 3Gb download !!
    It's more than that - it's 3 GB!

There's actually a cheaper alternative if you don't mind Windows 7 - this article outlines it pretty well. You download a Windows 7 ISO mirrored from Microsoft's Technet, and then use this tool from Microsoft to burn it to a USB stick, and then you pop off to Amazon and buy a licence key for Windows 7 Home for £30.
And Windows 7 is a better os than Windows 8 anyway, so with luck you won't need an upgrade again til Windows 9 (which surely can't be worse than Windows 8, can it?).
