Hi there, I'm looking for some advice. I wanted to get the nexus 5 and got a call last night from phones4u offering one for £21 a month but with only 100mb data. I said ok got credit checked, all was fine. Anyway, this morning I saw that car phone warehouse has the same phone same price, Vodafone again but 250mb, cancelled phones4u, rang CPW and got refused the contract as failed the credit check.

I'm assuming it was because I applied twice in 24 hours (perhaps Vodafone didn't know i'd cancelled). I checked my rating on experian and it's 'excellent' at 986.
My question is how long to safely wait before trying again?

Also, if a deal comes up for a different network am I ok to apply? E.g. orange had a great one a few days ago but it's gone now.

You know the number 986 is worthless, lenders dont see it and it doesn't guarantee to be accepted.

Yes might be because you applied twice in 24 hours. Why not get a sim only plan for half of the £21.
  • I don't really want to spend £295 outright, the cost from google. But I suppose I could and put it on a 0% credit card. It would work out at £12 a month (over 24 months) then payg still seem to be about a tenner a month, which would cost the same. Not sure it's worth it? 250-500mb seems about right data wise, I use very little minutes (under 50) but do text and send pictures.

    (But thanks for replying)

Yes, there is no way that Vodafone can determine whether or not you took up the deal with Phones4U. For credit check purposes, most companies just assume that you took up anything you applied for.

Who is your provider (if you have 1) ?
They might offer you a decent deal, cheaper than £10.
2 years is just a long time to be tied into a phone contract, I should know as Im currently coming to the end of mine.
  • Ah, didn't realise that, what's the best thing to do - wait a week and try again - presumably then the contract won't be on their system?

Or am I doomed and better to use a different network? If I'm lucky orange may have their £16.99 deal again soon? O2 (who I'm with now) are £27 for the same deal.

Thanks for the advice, I'm unconvinced payg is much better because it's the data I want mainly.

When I looked it was about £12, looked at orange and giffgaff (£10 tariffs). I've never gone sim only. You're right, three are cheap. I'm going to try to work out how much I would spend if I add my texts/mb and occasional calls.
