Useless and downright crooked gas fitters

Similar story about gas fitters not turning up. So I had a look myself and realised there was no output to the boiler from the valve in the airing cupboard. Got a new part from plumbers merchants and now all OK.
I am a retired electrician but it was quite easy to sort out and as long as you don't touch any gas components and isolate the electrics it is safe to have a look.0 -
In this guys defence, when dealing with old boilers it is often better to replace the whole thing because fixing it may cause another fault. As a customer you would be suspicious if he fixed one thing then needed another part because something else broke when disassembling it. Hence the reluctance to fix.
Depends on the boiler and the fault of course, so this guy may well have been dodgy. Especially as he waited so long to respond and quoted for the wrong part!0 -

Yeah I know. This particular boiler has an appetite for fans. The first time the fan seized it cost the best part of £300 - not the fitter's fault, I checked, the price of a new fan itself was well over £200. So last time the fan packed up I got a refurbished one off eBay for about £70 and fitted it myself, just three screws and two wires (with spade connectors). Simples.Je suis Charlie.0 -
I'm lucky enough to have found a plumber who seems completely honest and gives very good service. He's been round several times and not charged because the fix took seconds. Needless to say he's the first choice whenever we need anything doing and has made plenty of money in the long run.0
