I think it is more that since my mum was never in a position to build a full pension, dad's pension was used between them to keep the house going, which is now taken for his care.

Your Mum is entitled to 50% of your fathers private pension income and this should be disregarded when assessing your fathers payments for care.
This one constantly slips through and people should be made more aware of this .
Also your Mum should now be assessed as a single person for benefits as they no longer reside together, so council tax benefits etc should reflect this
I have been down this road and trust me full NHS funding for dementia is a fight that goes on for years. In the meantime you have to deal with all this and make sure your loved one is taken into the best Nursing home available.
Good luck and do not be bullied, research the internet, sign nothing without advice..
    Good luck

ps forgot to add ,your father is definitly eligible for the NHS contribution to care if he is in a Nursing home

Have a good read on this website also - very good source of information.

My family and I are going through this process at the moment with my mum - assessment is tomorrow - as dad passed away last month and mum has numerous and complex medical needs. She is now in a care home as there is no way she can live on her own.

    Good luck.

Was this Nursing Home advised and approved by Adult Social services as the best place possible for his needs?
If the answer is yes then any future increases for his care should be met by them and they should not ask the family for a top up if the fees increase. trust me , they will try it on
Your Fathers contributions to his care should only be assessed on his own personal income from state pension , pension credit and 50% of personal occupational pension and 50% of joint savings , shares etc.
There is absolutely no way that the matrimonial home can be taken into account for contributions to fees if your Mum still lives there.
