Just had new battery fitted for £35
Guy said it was testament to ford quality that the original battery lasted over 8 years compared to the 5 max he sees with other cars
Coul have got him to test it first, oh well
Don't have the time or knowledge or compulsion to get these testers, trickle chargers etc to save a few quid
Least I know the battery won't fail on the m1 at 630 in December
Just need a radio code now0

You hope the battery won't fail on you.
The reason for the tests is that a lot of "battery problems" aren't caused by the battery. Faulty charging systems can fail to keep even the best battery charged if their output is too low, and can destroy a new battery in weeks if their output is too high.
Similarly, if there's a drain because (for example) a boot light is stuck on then it doesn't matter how good the battery is, it will still go flat over time.
Finally, a faulty earth somewhere in the system can give all the appearance of a dead battery (including "working again" for a while after a jump start) but a new battery won't cure it.
Hopefully none of those apply in your case, but if they do you'll be wishing you'd been bthered with the testing, rather than just going for the quick swap, one cold December morning!0

You didn't say the battery was 8 years old.0

 Tut you're being pedantic now
 Firstly you didn't ask
Secondly in the first post I said it was an 8 year old car
Thirdly it can be safe to assume that since I never mentioned any previous battery change, then the battery had not previously been changed
Finally, most people noticed the above & safely assumed (correctly) that the battery was 8 years old as the comments show (ie 'car that age is probably due a battery change' etc)

I don't think everyone did take it as read, that the battery was 8 years old.If the battery is a few years old, it may be nearing the end of its useful life for starting a car.
Batteries are usually changed well before 8 years, hence it was reasonable to assume, the car was on its second (at least) battery.0

I disagree because we have had several batteries that have lasted at least 8 years before needing replacing, across different manufacturers. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

They are not "incredible batteries". They came with the vehicle fitted by the manufacturer. In my experience lasting at least 8 years is the norm. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
