Kindle fire - do you need a PC?

I am thinking of getting my mum a kindle fire for Xmas. She currently has an old samsung NetBook of mine but apparently it isn't working too well. Mum only needs internet, email, photos and possibly the iplayer so hopefully a tablet will do.
However will she need a PC to set it up, update etc? I live a long distance away so although I can help set it up at Christmas after that she won't have access to a PC at home.
Thank you

No, she doesn't need a pc and it's very simple to set up.0

That's great news - thanks. Do you reckon the 8gb will be sufficient or should I get the 16gb? Will be mainly used email / internet and maybe a crossword app if there is one.0

However she will need a wi-fi connection. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You mentioned photos, do you mean viewing photos or taking them? Because the Kindle Fire doesn't have a camera.0

get her a much better Nexus 7 instead
you can install Amazon Kindle app on that0
