When is Business Use required on car insurance???

Hi :hello:
It's the first time I've posted on this MSE forum :D so be gentle with me ;)

I'm a committee member at my dd's preschool and we had a meeting tonight.

Someone raised the issue of whether the staff members should be insured for business usage as they have to use their own cars when they occasionally attend courses related to their jobs ???

I usually turn to MSE when I have problems of my own so I thought I would try with this one too :D
So I hope some helpful knowledge peeps will be able to point me in the right direction :T

I will be eternally grateful for any information anyone can give me. Cheers MC :D

Yes they should, however in my experience they level of business cover required (class 1) for just driving to a different place of work has always been free if you ask for it

Would this really be business use - I assume you are not employed as a committee member? Doesn't seem to be any different to a "hobby" or any other "leisure time" activity.

So does that mean if you regularly drive your own car to work you need business insurance??

    That is "commuting"

So where's the difference between using your car to get to work or using your car to get to a work related course??

Assuming that the course is not at their "permenant place of work" the difference is that insurance companies class it as being different

Thanks. Never knew that. Used to have to drive to other branches and to courses in hotels in other towns and work never advised that.

Some insurers don't - they simply class it as commuting to a different place of work.

In any event, this is not "work" for the OP. It's an unpaid role which would not seem to be business use

At the risk of repeating myself;)

Even if it is the OP, volunteering.org.uk say "inform your insurer to ensure you are covered" so it's obviously a gray area which isn't what you want when dealing with an insurance company
