What is going on?!
I have been having all sorts of issues with British Gas since I moved to my new house in June.
The day I moved in I called them, gave them meter readings and requested to have pre-payment meters fitted so I could budget better. They gave me an appointment for the engineer to come out agreed that I could pay the balance of my final bill through the pre-payment meters. That, I thought, was that. Gosh it has been one issue after another and finally, 4 months later, the pre-payment meters were fitted and a weekly amount to pay off the final bills was agreed. This is the long and short of it but the list of errors by BG is the length of my arm!!!
Fast forward to today and a letter for the previous occupier has arrived from British Gas. I wouldn't normally open his post but he's been in prison since March for killing his wife, British Gas know that he no longer lives here, so I wondered why they would be writing to him.
Imagine my surprise to find that they are telling him that he's in arrears with his final gas and electricity bill and have quoted exactly the same amounts as my final bills before having the pre-payment meters fitted!!!! I am so confused as to what on earth they're playing at. I have letters to me regarding the final bills and now they have written to him regarding the final bills. Does it seem like there is some kind of crossed accounts?

Ignoring the fact that killing a spouse seems less unreasonablel than voluntarily opting to budget using a prepayment meter then of course the accounts are crossed. Tell them in writing and just wait for things to be sorted out. It may take an iteration or three. No idea why you want to pay 25% more for your energy - seems a funny sort of budgeting plan - but it is your choice.0

Quite right, it is my choice, I didn't ask this question to be berated over my choice of payment.
The fact that I have had, almost, daily contact with these people and they have made note after note on my account as there has been issue after issue since moving into my property I just feel exasperated that, once again, there is another problem.
I feel somewhat intrigued as to how stabbing and hammering your wife to death is anywhere near as unforgivable as me trying not to be faced with a massive bill as winter closes?

Stop opening post not addressed to you, and return it marked 'not known at this address' (or forward it to HM Prison if you prefer).
It's not your account and not your concern. No free lunch, and no free laptop

The thing is, it IS my account. I don't usually open the letters that arrive for them, I normally throw them out. I used to re-send them but I was getting upwards of 7 letters a day for them and I don't live near a postbox so I ended up with mounds piled up in my hallway. The postman refused to take them back and suggested I chuck them. So I do.
The account numbers and amounts are both the same in the letters for myself and previous occupier, I checked last night.0 -
Stop confusing matters, you cannot deal with any matters in someone elses name and you certainly cant discuss something learnt from mail you have broken into.0

I haven't broken into mail, it is my address. I have requested that their mail stops dropping on my mat and I was told that I could either throw it or open it and contact the senders to inform them of the circumstances. As I have been informed by Royal Mail, it is only illegal to open letters addressed to someone else if I was doing it to make a gain.
How is it me confusing things? I have lived in my house for 5 months, they have issued a final bill for both utilities and sent the final bill to both me and the previous occupier with the same account number. I don't recall doing that.0 -

You just need to deal with the information relating to you, your bill and your account. You gave them the opening readings and have your meters fitted. Done. If you get more letters for the previous occupier just return them marked 'not known at this address'.0
