How to change to widescreen monitor

My 19" monitor has given up so have the computer plugged into a 22" wide screen TV/monitor as a temporary measure. OK so far but the screen is sort of squashed sideways. I've lost the tool bar from the top and the back button also the sideways scroll at the bottom. Any idea how I can remedy this please?

right click on your desktop > screen resolution >. and play with the resolution till it's right.0

you may also find you need to tweak the display ratio. when i first plug a laptop into a TV say, i find all the edges of the display are outside the visible screen. i have to use the IGFXtray thingy and hunt very hard until i find the place where this can be changed - cant remember off top of my head, cos you only need do it once per monitor.
