Folks,

Anyone know what's best to use on ceilings full of grease, soot...etc? We're moving into a new place where previous tenants possibly used to burn stuff and all the ceilings are filthy!

Thanks

If you are on a budget either try white spirit or sugar soap. If not, look at an American range of products made by Zinsser. The best one is probably the shellac based one which can be used directly over fire damage with no surface prep. It comes in 4 litre tins, costing about £40 from Crown-Brolac outlets. Be warned, it has high VTOCs though (smelling like french polish). So keep the windows open. You should also use a suitable solvent (meths) for cleaning up. I would advise you use throw away brushes/rollers though, as cleaning is a chore.

we had the same problem, moved into a house where the previous owners constantly burnt candles. sugar soap didn't clear it, our decorator used diluted PVA as a first coat then ordinary emulsion.
