Tethering

Hello all,

Apologies if this may be better suited to another sub forum.

I'm hoping for some help and advice- I have a new iPad and a Samsung S3. As does my husband. Currently we pay monthly contracts to our mobiles and also have the 3G mobile data monthly for our iPads.

This means we're giving O2 around £100 a month (mobile contracts will be downgraded to sim only once out of contract) and someone mentioned to me this thing of tethering your 3G to your iPad. Is this possible? If so how do I do it please? I'd rather do this than pay O2 £20 more than I need to a month :T

Thanks in advance

Tethering is possible - but you might struggle with tethering a Samsung with an iPad.

Without telling you to change one or other of the devices (I'm sure you'll get replies shortly about how much better Samsung tablets are than Apple ones), here's how it would work if you had an iPhone and iPad...
On the iPhone go to Settings, then Personal hotspot, then switch that on and connect wirelessly from the iPad.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I'm not sure why WTFH thinks that you may struggle with tethering a Samsung with an iPad.

Info on setting up your S3 is given here

Once you have created a portable hotspot any device regardless of make should be able to easily connect.

Some mobile operators do not allow tethering but O2 give info here and it is easy enough for you to try and then save some money.

Thank you to both for your replies. I have followed espresso's instructions and I am posting this on my iPad via my mobiles portable hotspot! How exciting!

So just to confirm. My phone will be able to provide internet via 3G to my iPad using this? When there is no wifi my phone can be the 3G for my iPad? It being called a Portable WiFi hotspot is confusing me. Sorry if I sound thick!

    Thanks for the help :)

You might want to consider Three. Their One Plan includes tethering; and it has 'all you can eat' data options.

Not all the 'all you can eat' plans allow tethering though so be careful.

Yes while connected to your local hotspot that you have now created on your S3, you won't be using your iPad's 3G data SIM.
