TAB finance selling my details

Had 5 phone calls over past week, all asking for me by name, from Money group. Phoned them this morning and asked where they had got my details from. The girl told me that they had purchased my details from TAB Finance. I have never had dealings with TAB, so my questions are: Who are TAB? How did they get my details? Is it legal to sell my personal details? What about the Data Protection Act?
Can anybody help me, I am incensed that my personal details should be being bandied about, especially as I am starting to get my head above water!

You will have to follow the white rabbit I'm afraid and contact TAB Fiance to ask them where they got your data, etc. I would suggest formalising it through a subject access request and then getting each provider to remove your information. Eventually you'll find the source.
Unfortunately in the modern world all you have to do is neglect to un-tick a box when filling out a form and you're data is fair game. Even if you didn't it only takes one person in a company to illegally sell on your information without the company knowing anything about it (I've seen this happen in insurance call centers). My own details were sold illegally by T-mobile and I'm still getting calls about my contract mobile phone.
The best response you can give to any cold call is 'please remove my information from your database'. Never say 'i'm not interested' because they treat that as an op out and will just ring you again from a different product when their next sales campaign starts. If the company refuses to do this, play them along enough to get a name and number then report them to OFCOM.
A good tip is if they called you from a withheld number, this is against OFCOM regulation for 'cold calls' so you know right off the bat they are non-compliant and you can go straight to OFCOM.0 -
Thanks Morrow 1984,
Will try and track down a number for TAB that isn't an 0844 one, don't fancy racking up my phone bill whilst they lead me a merry dance.

OK! Found details of TAB Finance on internet, complete with really bad reviews, but still no number other than the 0844 one. Did manage to find out name of bloke who runs TAB so I contacted a relative of mine in Huddersfield, who looked in phone book and lo and behold a local telephone number! I rang the telephone number and spoke to Mr **** asking him where he had obtained my details! he said that I had ticked a box. I again asked which box and how had he obtained my details and he got really stroppy and told me to put my query in writing. Which I shall now do.
If any one else needs his name or telephone number, please pm me and I shall pass it on to you (after all it is a matter of public record). I won't put it on this site as I am not sure if it is ok to do so.0 -
Hi, At 8pm I was called by Harrington Brookes Accountants wanting to improve my credit rating. I asked them who had supplied my name and telephone number. Tab Finance was their reply and I had possibly entered a competition with my information! Harrington Brookes said I had been declined credit ..from entering a competition? I said they were unethical to buy personal information from an unreliable source and to remove my details. Would like info on Tab director please.0

I am having the very same problem and it is very annoying I want my details taken off all these finance things - I do not have a bank account or credit card and definitely don't have any debts or loans so I want my name removed from everything explain why this is happening? please somebody tell me how to do it?0

It all depends on who you have given your details to and what your response to that company is. Many now have a box that you have to untick (online) to stop your details being passed on. DPA doesnt come into it if you havent unchecked this box.
Have you told TAB you wish to be removed and that they are not to sell on your details? If not I would do

local number just rings until you get a message that you cannot leave a voicemail!0

The 01484 number rings for a while and then a fax tone comes on.
Has anyone tried ringing the 0844 number?
An email address would be good too.0
