Ceramic Hob Cracked

We have a slide in cooker with a ceramic hob.

Just noticed there is a big crack across the corner, going right across one of the heating rings.

Both our kids deny dropping anything on it. Can these things just crack after years of use (9 years old) or is someone telling pork pies.

Is it safe to use (heating element still works)?

If someone did drop something on it, can we claim on our contents insurance? Would the insurance company just increase our premiums so that any benefit in claiming is lost?

Can the glass top be replaced, or would that be so expensive that we might as well get a new cooker?

  • My mother's ceramic hob cracked a few years after it was installed ..... when I was house sitting for her. Of course I got the blame! I couldn't understand how it could have happened as the glass in those hobs is made by the same company that (at the time) made the windows in the space shuttle. Tough stuff.

It turns out that the kitchen fitters had cut the hole in the worktop far too small. Over time the worktop had expanded slightly and put pressure on the glass causing it to crack. She claimed on her house insurance.

    They can crack from impact.

No you shouldnt use it. The glass top is changeable (not cheap) but it might be worth making an assessment to see if the glass is worth changing or it may be worth investing in an induction hob.

Should not be used as element may be exposed now or water could possibly get in giving you a bigger problem.
Think depending on what make that you can get replacement for it but no idea how much
    63 mortgage payments to go.

You do remember the Columbia disaster don't you? Ceramic is extremely heat resistant but not resistant against things hitting it. If its anything like glass and some ceramics contain silica they can develop unseen flaws and then crack at the slightest touch.

My moneys on the kids though Occams razor and all.
  • Put an induction hob in ..............brilliant they are.
  • We'll get a new cooker. Will consider induction hob.
