My daughter(yes really) has put a lot of files on a pen drive. She made the mistake of lending the drive to a friend and when it came back no files were visible. The files were still there as I have been able to view then on SUSE but not windows. Her comp runs XP. The file names start with:-
\found.000\file0001.chk.etc. There is no visible lock on the pen drive. Any suggestions how we can get them back? I tried copying the file in vain using SUSE but XP refuses to read them.
\found.000\file0001.chk.etc. There is no visible lock on the pen drive. Any suggestions how we can get them back? I tried copying the file in vain using SUSE but XP refuses to read them.

found.000\file0001.chk indicates that a scandisk has been run on the flash drive and it found errors and recovered the files and gave them the default filenames. file0001.chk and each file increases the number.
they are recoverable but it can be time consuming.0 -
Any suggestions how? I can't see the file on XP and files named in SUSE are invisible to windows. Well not so much invisible but garbage.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

What sort of files were they originally? As little John has said, the scandisk program has recognised that these files exists but it doesn't know what the name of the file is so it has called them *.chk. You need to rename them with the correct file extension with the program that originally created the file. For example, if they were Word files, try copying the *.chk file to your hard drive, rename it to *.doc and try opening it. When you say garbage, do you mean the filename is garbage or the contents? If it is the contents, what program are you using to open and view them in?0

Thanks for all the help, I've managed to at least see the files on the pen by setting my comp up to read all files. As they are not visible in viewable in windows I am viewing them in SUSE and will set up daughters laptop to view all files as well. She can then rename them for viewing in XP. (I hope)
The files were pictures and music from her mobile etc.
The current name for the file is garbage not the contents therefore XP won't read it.
If above fails I'll try the PC Inspector link.
