Fairness in the workplace

Hi Barspeed
Fairness doesn't necessarily mean treating everyone the same. It would be fair to treat everyone with equal consideration tho I think - which doesn't sound as if it is happening. I don't think you will get very far by demanding anything - negotiation is usually more effective. Depending on the natures of your colleagues and your bosses, I would approach one of the other with a solution - can you appeal to the rest of the staff, can you come up with a plan that gets all the hours covered by someone, that everyone is happy with - unless your boss is a !!!!!!! (and there are a surprising number of those) they will be happy if you come up with the solution. Try talking to your colleagues. If everyone agrees, it will be harder for your boss to refuse too. That is not to make out it will be easy, it depends on whether there is a collegiate culture, or whether it is more 'every man (or woman!) for themselves'. As the newbie, you may have to work hard to make allies (friends even!), but I would suggest the easiest way forward is to appeal to your colleagues' better natures - you need to consider them too, I don't know about car parking, but there may be more to it than that. Get to know them - you may be surprised at how supportive they can be if you ask them. Of course there are some pretty nasty unco-operative people about who aren't managers too - and if that's many of your work mates you may want to start looking for another job, cos this won't be the only thing that they are going to make awkward for you. Never forget that what people SHOULD do and what they HAVE to do, are seldom the same thing, so work on your charm! Good luck. You deserve equal consideration, but that doesn't mean you will get it.0 -
Things have moved on a bit this week.
I have now been asked to work Saturday mornings as well. The tyrant of a supervisor said that I am contractually obliged to work the odd Saturday which can be paid or taken off in lieu during the week.
I checked my contract, I checked my acceptance letters and condition and unconditional offer letters and at no point does it mention occasional Saturday morning working. As far as I am aware it also was not stated in the Job advertisement.
Where do I stand here now!?
In the matter of a week I have gone through changes in times I work because the Supervisor doesn't want to work until 5:30 and now being asked to work Saturday's!0 -

Which is in a not very safe place, given that you've only been there two months.Funky_Bold_Ribena wrote: »You stand the same place as you were last week.
One question though, is everyone being expected to work the occasional Saturday? And is this a recent change, ie the dept only just started opening on Saturdays?
It may be worth a phone call to HR, asking about these Saturdays. You could also, without giving your name, find out where to access the grievance procedure. But I'd word a grievance very very carefully at this stage.
Also, are you in a union? If not, I'd join one now.Signature removed for peace of mind0
