you've got your car back in one piece with no need to ring the insurer think yourself lucky. Insurer probably wouldnt of paid out on the fuel anyway.
they would of towed it to preserve forensic evidence and keep it in secure storage until its been processed.

  • usually the police pay for the storage of forensic vehicles..need to go back to the police station and ask for the fee to be paid..

I know this as I recently had a van that had been uplifted by police as they suspected the van had been used in illegal activitys(it was actually the original owner I had bought the van from a dealer 2 weeks before police seized the van,I had no van for 3 days while they checked it over so lost out on 3 days work which I got back
  • Maybe they drove it backwards everywhere and it didnt clock up any mileage?

Perhaps you misread the mileage and maybe the thieves were just returning the car when it ran out of petrol.
My car is outside now and I can only estimate mileage within about 1000, should I be noting it after each trip?

My wife who claims travelling expenses for work always knows her cars millage. She logs her millage at the start of the working day and again at the end.

Many people would know a cars millage for various reasons!
