how do you get from central london to south west

Had to travel from East London (close to central) to south west, sometimes Kingston, Chessington.

Have a trip tomorrow to Petersfield. I had to travel on local roads for hours on end a few days ago to get to a shop near chessington.

There doesn't seem to be any quicker roads than A3. I've been on the A3. It's DIRE!

Route here. Suggestions for better route would be much appreciated.

I'd go A4. Bad at first but once you clear Warwick road it's normally reasonable all the way out to the m25.

    What time of day?

Are you wanting to avoid the CC?

Oh i see, to take the A4?

to be honest I don't think I'll save much time going through from east to west through central london. I would have thought going away from the city, driving south east to m25 and then taking route to petersfield would be better. But that's an extra 20 miles.. hmm

If you answer what time of day it is I can give you the routes as I'm familiar with that route

cheers, i need to get to my destination at 10:30, so I'll leave whenever I can to get there. I am anticiapting that leaving at 8 is probably best.

Clearing the m25 band will take most of the time I think. Crazy because when I did my trip to Northampton I managed to get there in 1h45mins but then you can get on the motorways very quickly when driving north.

Assuming you don't mind paying the CC charge then this route will be quicker and avoids the potential problems of the A4 or M25.

You're making the mistake of following the Sat Nav which takes you through Clapham and many other pinch points, the quickest route is along Wandsworth Road A3036 from Vauxhall. Stay on it all the way past Clapham Junction until you get to West Hill.

This is the quickest route from Tower Bridge to Vauxhall

Over Tower Bridgethen right into Tanner Street, Leather Market St then down Weston St and right into Long Lane. Marshalsea Road and then along Copperfield Rd and all the way along Street and keep going as it becomes The Cut keep going as it becomes Baylis Road as you get to Lambeth North Station ignore the Sat Nav and take the dog leg turn into Hercules Road and then right into Lambeth Road then left onto Albert Embankment and follow it to Vauxhall. When you get to Vauxhall take Wandsworth Road.

If you're thinking of going via the Blackwall Tunnel to join the M25 bear in mind there are road works along the Southern stretch for about 15 miles at 50mph.

If you're driving across SW London be careful as Sat Navs often try and route you via Tooting which is a really slow route
  • A good route, but if you go that way, don't forget the congestion charge.

Thanks, I didn't get to read this in time. I followd the satnav which sailed close to the rout your describe. Not worth paying a tenner for conjestion so I drove around the CC souther border crossing tower bridge (no where near as choked as afternoon rush hour).

I had to deliver something close to houses of parliament once, and the embankment route inside CC was actually more conjested inside than out. Because everyone is driving into the city by crossing tower bridge northbound.

Went all the way to Wandsworth bridge and then got on a dual carriageway and then a motorway ( i think A3).

1.5-2 hrs each way, though 1 hr must have been on the the 10 miles inside the city. Crazy that people still drive into work. Thankfully I don't need to make that trip on a daily basis.

The Sat Nav would have either taken you along Tooley St / Southwark St / Stamford St or south via Tower Bridge Rd, New Kent Road and Elephant and Castle.

Either way is much slower than my route and has lots of potential to go wrong and get caught in traffic.

If you came out by Wandsworth Bridge that's the route the sat nav suggests which is via Battersea which is a much slower route than Wandsworth Rd due to extra traffic and lots of traffic lights.

Wandsworth Road has Bus Lanes which are open to traffic for most of the day so you can sail along especially when coming back into London.
