Need a copy of DLA-related earnings for year (p60)?

Hi all,

Basically we need to obtain a copy of my dad's earnings from DLA from 2011/12. We cannot recall him receiving any form of p60, so I ask;

- Do you receive a p60 if you receive DLA? If not, which document would show earnings for that year?

- Who issues this document?

- How can I obtain a copy?

I've read that he can visit his tax office, but this may not be possible due to his condition.

I would greatly appreciate any answers. Thank you!

  • DLA isn't counted as income for tax purposes, or for means tested benefits.
Your Dad's bank statement that the DLA goes in would show each payment.
His award letter or annual uprating letter would show how much he gets each week.

The reason a copy of his earnings is needed, is to aid my student finance application. I therefore need to be able to show his full annual income for that year, which would include total DLA payment. I'm a bit lost as to what I should send..

The money you get from DLA isn't earnings. It is a payment to help with the care &/or mobility needs a claimant has.

As mentioned by others here, it isn't taxable, so nothing at all to do with the tax office.

Your father will have been receiving letters from DWP each year, usually around setting out how much DLA he will be receiving each month. These are standard amounts, depending on what level of care &/or mobility he has been awarded. If the money was paid into his bank account it will show up on his statements & is easily identified as it will have DLA by each credit made by DWP.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Does it definitely say that DLA must be declared as part of your dad's income for your Student Finance application?

Hmm, now that I think about it, he may have received ESA during that period which I assume counts as earnings? The reason I keep mentioning earnings is because I'm sure he received a p60 that we've misplaced. Where would an ESA p60 be received from?

Also, I don't think DLA would count as earnings but I'll let you know if I find otherwise.
  • ESA is counted as income if contributions based, but the income related type is not. However you would get a P60u for both.
DLA is not counted in anyway so no P60u to receive.
You can look at your dad's bank statements and add up the ESA figures in the same way and that will give you some idea of his income, but better if you can find that P60u as that has the more accurate figure on it. DWP might be able to tell your Dad his ESA income for the last tax year ending April 2013 by phone, but he would have to speak to them.

Thanks for the information. I need something written on a formal letter or a p60 substitute for 2011-2012 (not 12-13). What would be the best way to go about this?

    - a P60 is issued by your tax office
    - it shows your total earnings from a job or pension in the previous tax year
    - it also shows how much tax you have paid
    - if you have several jobs or pensions then you should receive a P60 for each of them
    - the one you misplaced you would have received around April or May

To get a replacement / duplicate P60 first approach you employer, your employer is obliged to keep records of pay for three years and so they should be able to provide you with a copy of your P60 for the last three years. HMRC can't provide a duplicate of your P60. You need to contact the tax office of whoever you were working for / pensioned by on the 5th April of whatever year you want the P60 [or a statement of earnings] for.

    Best of luck !

  • But who would issue a p60 for ESA? I'm also now think that he may have instead been receiving IB, as whatever it was, it stopped being paid as soon as the new system came in (which I assume is ESA)
  • When your dad was in receipt of IB, it was made up from different contributions. The income related amount he'd received is non taxable, whereas the contribution based amount was.

The DWP may have wrongly put down the 'top' [income & contribution elements] figure. Contact the DWP and ask them to confirm in writing the breakdown of (1) income related payments and (2) contribution payments in order that the correct figure for ESA can be included in the tax calculation.

This is not my area - perhaps the Cap't can help with a better applied knowledge.
