Issue with Carphone Warehouse

I purchased a black iPhone 4s back in March from Carphone Warehouse (phone is upgrade on existing o2 contract). The sales rep offered to set the phone up for me - this was done in front of me, and the phone didn't leave my sight. Fast forward to last week and all of a sudden the phone will not connect to WiFi - I followed the troubleshooting guide on the Apple website and it didn't fix the issue, so I took it back to CPW. They suggested it would be quicker to take it to the Apple Store for repair, so I did.

Apple won't fix it, as they state the phone was originally a white iPhone, but has been modified and fitted with a black surround. I was utterly :eek:to hear this, as the phone hasn't been repaired, modified or tampered with in any way since I got it, nor have I had any issues with the phone before now. CPW repair centre said the same thing and are denying any responsibility, claiming that I have modified it and it's up to me to prove that the phone was sold to me in that state - something that is impossible to do.

I have contacted CPW to complain and emailed Citizens Advice for help, but I want what I paid for - a genuine black iPhone 4S. Any ideas what I can do?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Does the paperwork from CPW not state the colour?
  • It states that it is a black iPhone 4s, but the bit you plug the charger into should be black on a black iPhone - the part on my phone is white, which is why they're saying it's been modified and are refusing to repair it. The IMEI numbers on the box and phone match too.

So, what CPW's conspiracy theory is?

Is it that you've bought a black phone from them with a different IMEI and then replaced all interior parts with the parts from some other white iPhone with the current IMEI?

Sorry if I'm not making myself clear. The IMEI on the phone matches the IMEI on the original packaging and, as far as CPW are concerned, it's a bonafide black iPhone. I have magically changed the interior of the phone to a white one, yet used my technical wizardry to keep the same IMEI. Does that make sense?

Does the box (or the unit itself) not have an Apple part number on it?

    They usually do...

I didn't know about the sim tray - I'll check this when I get the phone back.
