Loads of people tell me different stuff, but I wanted all of your advice since you've helped me in the past.

What is the best way to connect these up to get the best out of both?

I think your options are limited.
The dvd player has Composite, S-Video and Component connectors
The TV has 3 HDMI and component

as a result you need to use component.
