I was searching online for a wooden advent calendar to buy when I came across this site with a good selection of plain versions for customising:

They are lovely. Studio have some colourful wooden ones for £8, if you were planning on making several it might be cheaper to get those and spray paint to a base colour. Saying that I really want one on that link (I must resist!)
