Flying to Cnanda, driving over US border-visa?

Flying to Toronto, then driving over US border and flying home from JFK. Don't think I need a visa, and ESTA only applies to Air or boat arrivals- am I correct?? Have tried to call US embassy but never managed to speak to anyone...

Yes, you are correct, you do not need an ESTA.

Assuming you are eligible under the VWP, you'll have to fill in a form (I-94W) and pay a fee ($9 rings a bell, but could be wrong) at the US border.

Visa Waiver Program When Arriving By Land

If you are entering the United States by land from Canada or Mexico, you will obtain your I-94W visa waiver form at the border crossing. There is a fee of $6 U.S. per person. On average the process takes 30-60 minutes, though it can take two or three hours at very busy times.

You do not require a pre-approval through ESTA (described above) when entering the U.S. by land.

See this discussion page (answer #7) for an understandable explanation of the VWP. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-...

More than likely you tried to call a £1.50 a minute call centre operating from Glasgow.

Border wait times are listed on one of the US govts websites.

As a general note, its not only VWP issues, Canada has some really tough rules in regards to DUIs and general criminality.

Thanks Danny-shouldn't be an issue for us!

That wasn't aimed at you, so apologies for the bad wording/placement. Its surprising that people who can legally enter the US, can't legally enter Canada.

    wait times are posted here
