change in circumstances for grant

I am a second year medical student in Edinburgh and I live in England.
Because my parents are separated and I live with my mother who does not work I get a full grant and I also get an additional bursary. I think the additional bursary is because I am classed as a "poorer student" as I get the full grant.
I have been paid for this term.
I think my parents may be about to reconcile and I am wondering how this will affect my grant.
I know when I fill next year's grant form in that my circumstances will be different and I know that my father's salary will mean that I will not get anything like I get at the moment.
However, I am wondering what will happen about this year.
Do I have to inform the SLC about my change in circumstances for the current year and it gets stopped from now on and would I have to pay back any money I have received this year.
I hope that my parents do reconcile of course as this is quite upsetting for my mum but I would like to know how I would stand from a grant point of view.
Many thanks for replies

You will get less money once your dad's income is accounted for, don't bother lying to them as the DO check, as someone on my course found out last year... and then you'd have to pay back everything you'd been given above the amount you're actually entitled to, pretty much staight away. Also, knowingly putting the wrong figures down on your application to get more money does constitute an attempt to defraud the student finance company.
I think there's something on the SFE website that you can use to work out how much you'll get if your father's income is included in calculations.

  • You won't have to pay back any money for this year if your parents reconcile - its your circumstances at the start of the year which matter, so on September 1st (arbitrary date), you were entitled to the full amount, so you will get it, even if its paid a chunk in September, a chunk in January and a chunk in April, and your parents reunite in December.

Of course you can contact them for a reassessment, which means you won't get the January and April payments, but I can't imagine why you'd want to.

You can work out on the student finance website what your entitlement will be for next year if your parents get back together and your fathers income is taken into account.

    Hope that helped.
